Erta Ale is one of the few volcanoes on the world that have an almost persistent lava lake. It is an isolated basaltic shield volcano, 50 km wide, rising more than 600 m from below sea level in the barren

Erta Ale is only 613 m high, but as typical for a shield volcano has a very gentle slopes and a large 40 km diameter base. The summit is truncated by a complex, elongated 1700 x 600 m wide caldera which contains vast lava flows and several larger and smaller pit craters, most notably the active north and south crater, which contains the lava lake at present.

The tour starts and ends on Mekele, Meet and join the group , Proceed to Ahmed Ella, the DAY TRIP See the long camel caravans. Early drive to Dodom, a base for Erta ale, late afternoon after taking early dinner trek to Erta ale watch the dramatic active volcanic activity. Morning walk around the main and most southern pits and craters then back to Dodom, a free time for relax and proceed to Hamad Ella. colorful salts mining, Lake Assal, camel caravans loaded with a bare of rock salt, Drive back to Hamed Ella and return back to Mekele.

Itinerary
Day 1: EXCURITIONS TO ERTALE Mekele – Hamede Ella

Day 1: Mekele – Hamede Ella

Morning Meet and join the group at Atse Yohanes Hotel / OTHER HOTEL OR AIRPORT Mekele. Drive to Hamed Ella via Berhale. The Danakil Depression can be said to ‘begin’ here. It is one of the most inhospitable regions of the world, but is nonetheless spectacular, full of eye-catching colors, as in the sulfur springs. The desert has several points lying more than 100 meters (328 ft) below sea level. You pass through a small town of Berhale where the camel caravans stop before they proceed to the northern highlands. En route you see many long caravans going to the salt mines and others coming out of the Danakil with their salt loaded camels. (3-4 hrs drive). Camp at Hamed Ella. 

Day 2: HAWZEN

Mekele TO HAWZEN

Visit more of Tigray's remote and ancient rock-hewn churches: Abraha Atsbeha, dating from the 10th century; the beautiful Wukro Chirkos; and Medhane Alem Kesho. Drive to HAWZEN

Day 3: AXUM

HAWZEN TO AXUM

Drive to AXUM passing the Adwa battlefield, site of Emperor Menelik II's 1895 victory over the invading Italians. AFTERNOON Tour the ancient stelae fields, standing for 2000 years. Visit the new and impressive Archeological Museum. Visit other tombs and archeological sites as time permits.
