Overview
  • Krampus is probably the most unique Christmas tradition in Europe. Young men dress as evil demons and wander the streets beating and whipping anyone who dares to watch. I call it Christmas with fear. In the backdrop is one of my favorite Christmas Markets located on the beautiful walking streets of Berchtesgaden. It is absolutley amazing. This three day trip will bring you to my favorite salt mine, schnapps factory, brewery, and Christmas Market. Plus you will get to meet, drink, and talk with the Krampus demons learning their history and tradition. Once the demons put their masks on and begin to parade through the town you will have the opportunity to watch or run in utter fear. It is the only way to experience this unique tradition.

Itinerary
Day 1 Arrival In Berchtesgaden

Pickup from Munich Hauptbahnhof (main train station) and transferred to Berchtesgaden.

After checking in to the centrally-located three star accommodation, we make our way to the city of Salzburg using private transportation. Once there we will wander the Christmas Market(s), the Augsutiner Brewery, and the Krampus March that occurs outside the Dom Church. This is the perfect introduction to the world of Krampus as the demons at this market are tame.

Day 2 Salt Mine, Schnapps factory, Hofbraü Brewery, and Krampus March

We will regroup for breakfast at the hotel then make our way to the local salt mine where you will be transported over 150 meters below the earth’s surface! We then have lunch at the Salt Mine restaurant before leaving Berchtesgaden and traveling to the Grassl Enzian Schnapps Factory for a tour, tasting, and opportunity to meet the 'country' Krampus as they march from their secret layer in the mountains. This is where things start to get really scary as these Krampus' are NOT tame.

That evening after licking our wounds :) we make our way to the Hofbraü Brewery in Berchtesgaden for dinner and beverages before wandering the Christmas Market and Krampus Marches of Berchtesgaden.

Day 3 Konigsee Lake and Murnau village

December 7th we pack our stuff and make our way to the Konigsee lake for a short tour of the area and opportunity to watch the events occuring at the World Cup Bobsled track. Then it to Murnau am Staffelsee where you will be dropped off at the Murnau train station for a short 45 minute ride back into the city of Munich.
