Day 1 Amman - Petra - Amman
Depart from your hotel in Amman in the morning and enjoy a scenic drive along the Desert Highway to Petra, the ancient Nabatean city carved into the red sandstone rocks. The journey will take about three hours, depending on the traffic and the weather conditions. Petra is one of the New Seven Wonders of the World and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Arrive at Petra and meet your local guide at the visitor center. Your guide will accompany you through the main attractions of the site, starting with the Siq, the narrow gorge that leads to the hidden city. Marvel at the Treasury, the most famous and iconic monument of Petra, as you emerge from the Siq. The Treasury is a massive facade carved into the rock, with intricate details and decorations. The Treasury is also known as Al-Khazneh in Arabic, and it was featured in the movie Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.
Continue your guided tour and explore the Street of Facades, the Theater, the Royal Tombs, the Colonnaded Street, the Great Temple, and the Qasr al-Bint. Learn about the history, culture, and architecture of the Nabateans, who built Petra as their capital and trading hub in the 6th century BC. Petra was a flourishing city until it was abandoned and forgotten for centuries, until it was rediscovered by a Swiss explorer in 1812. Petra History is fascinating and rich, spanning from the ancient times to the modern era.
After your guided tour, which will last about two hours, you will have some free time to explore Petra on your own. You can either return to the visitor center or venture further into the site. You can hike to the Monastery, another impressive facade carved into the mountain, or to the High Place of Sacrifice, a sacred altar with panoramic views of the valley. You can also visit the Petra Museum, the Petra Church, or the Cave of Aaron, the tomb of Moses’ brother. Petra Attractions are numerous and diverse, offering something for everyone.
Enjoy a delicious lunch at a local restaurant near the visitor center, where you can taste some of the traditional Jordanian dishes, such as mansaf, maqluba, or shawarma. You can also try some of the local sweets, such as baklava, kunafa, or halva. [Jordanian Cuisine] is influenced by the Levantine, Arabian, and Mediterranean cultures, and it is known for its use of spices, herbs, and olive oil.
After lunch, return to your private vehicle and drive back to Amman. You will arrive at your hotel in the evening, with plenty of memories and photos of your amazing day trip to Petra.
