Day 3: Mahmudia - Malcoci village - Tulcea Danube Delta Aquarium - Bucharest

Before returning to Bucharest we will stop in Malcoci village to see The Catholic Church belongs to the German community. At Malcoci we find a Roman Catholic church, more precisely its ruins. The village was founded by German settlers in 1843. The Roman Catholic Swabians came from Alsace region. The Swabians were invited by Empress Catherine II in the mid 1700s, to settle in Southern Russia, where they obtained land and the guarantee to preserve their language and culture. Later when these rights were restricted by Russian Tsar Alexander I (he introduced compulsory military service and assimilative policies) they decided to emigrate in Dobrogea. The Germans arrived in Dobrogea in several waves, first time between 1841 and 1856. The Roman Catholic church was built in 1880 by the German community, and despite the fact that in 1940 the Germans were deported or forcibly were sent to Germany, the church withstood Communist dictatorship; today however it is on the verge of collapse. The roof was taken away, only the outer walls and the tower still exist. The small German community who remained in Malcoci is using the house of prayer near the church every Sunday. This combined museum and aquarium is a good primer on the delta's varied flora and fauna. Admire the Macin Mountains at Macin National Park on the way. Transfer to Bucharest to your hotel or to Henri Coanda International Airport.
