Day 1: Marodoka
Explore the eastern side of the island with a visit to historic Marodoka and other notable landmarks on this excursion that combines both culture and relaxation. Settle in for a leisurely drive with a photo stop before arriving at the remains of the 17th-century Arab-Indian village of Marodoka, whose giant banyan trees seem to stand as a silent memorial to those who once lived here. Continue to a ylang-ylang distillery, where you’ll learn how oil is extracted from these flowers and used in the production of perfumes and lotions, then briefly visit a compact zoo to see the resident lemurs reptiles, and chameleons, as well as a stunning orchid garden. Discover the over-200-yearold Sacred Tree, one of the island’s most important cultural sites of the Malagasy people, and pause at a souvenir market to browse a wide variety of goods, including intricate woodcarvings, embroidery, raffia baskets, and spices. Upon returning to your port of Hell-Ville, you’ll stop at sundrenched Ambatoloaka, one of the island’s best beaches, where you’ll enjoy a soft drink and folk performance at the Espadon Hotel and perhaps take a stroll along the warm, golden sand.
